Sign with words Closing Books shuts out ideasPlease join Ms. Varney’s SOC 249 Mass Media and Mass Culture class on Thursday, September 26 from 2:00-3:15 at the Main Campus Conference Room in Building F for a campus wide student created event to bring awareness to Banned Book Week. Banned Book Week is a national awareness campaign created by the American Library Association (ALA) in 1982 in response to strong challenges against books by various schools, libraries, and bookstores. At this time over 11,300 books have been challenged and the ALA is fighting censorship via this yearly event.

This event came about when Ms. Varney’s class was discussing the danger of censorship, the SKYCTC QEP, the importance of reading and Banned Book Week. The class decided to make the assignment a campus wide event to bring awareness to this issue.

So, join Ms. Varney's SOC 249 class as they bring awareness of banning books such as The Color Purple, Tom Sawyer, A Child Called It, Harry Potter and many more. Students will be leading a 50 minutes discussion with various visuals. They will then end the event with a "Read In" in which we ask those in attendance to bring their copy of Animal Farm or any book that they enjoy and join in solidarity against censorship by sitting quietly and reading as one for 10 minutes.

If there are any questions please feel free to contact Ms. Varney at Bertena.varney@kctcs.edu

Please share with anyone who you think may be interested.
